How to Host a Board Game Birthday Party in Guelph
The private room at Cardboard & Cider gets booked for birthday parties fairly regularly, and over seven years of hosting them Martin has noticed a few things that make the difference between a party that works and one that quietly falls apart by the second hour.
Keep the group size manageable
The back room seats up to fourteen people, and fourteen is genuinely the upper limit for a games-focused event. Beyond that, it becomes difficult to keep everyone in the same game, and you end up with two separate groups who barely interact. For a birthday party where the point is to spend time together, twelve is a more comfortable number.
If your guest list is larger, consider splitting into two rooms or booking the whole cafe for a private evening. We can discuss that option by email.
Pick one anchor game and let the rest be flexible
The parties that work best usually have one game that everyone plays together for the first hour, and then a looser second half where people can drift between smaller games. The anchor game gives the event a shared experience and a natural conversation starter. The flexible second half means people who want to keep playing can, and people who want to chat can do that too.
Martin will suggest an anchor game based on your group when you book. He'll ask a few questions about who's coming and what they've played before.
Food that works alongside games
The snack platter add-on for private room bookings is designed specifically for this situation: things you can eat with one hand, nothing that leaves grease on the cards. The cheese and charcuterie board, the soft pretzels, and the seasonal baked goods all work well. A full sit-down meal before the games start is fine; ordering pizza mid-game is not something we can accommodate in the room.
The catering add-on needs 48 hours' notice. Drinks from the bar are ordered as you go, same as the main cafe.
Booking and what to expect
The private room is booked from $120 for two hours, with additional hours available. A dedicated games guide is included for the first hour to help with rules and recommendations. After that, the bar staff are available if you need anything.
