Why People Keep Coming Back

600-Plus Games on the Shelf

From fifteen-minute filler games to sprawling campaign titles that take three sessions to finish. Every game is sleeved, sorted, and checked after every play.

Staff Who Actually Know the Games

Every person behind the counter has played most of what's on the shelf. Ask for a recommendation and you'll get a real one, not a shrug toward the bestseller rack.

Ontario Cider on Tap

We rotate six Ontario ciders through the taps, plus a handful of local craft beers and a full coffee bar. Nothing from a macro-brewery, nothing from a concentrate.

No Time Pressure

The table fee covers your whole visit. We don't flip tables. If your game runs long, it runs long. We've had groups finish at midnight on a Tuesday.

Two-Player Board Games for a Date Night in Guelph

A significant portion of the bookings at Cardboard & Cider on Friday and Saturday evenings are couples. Some are regulars who come in every week with a specific game in mind. Others are on a first or second date and have no idea what to ask for. Both groups leave happy if they get the right game, and the wrong game can make a two-hour evening feel much longer.

About the place

Martin Tetlow

Founder, Established since 2019

Martin Tetlow spent a decade managing the games floor at a hobby shop in Guelph before deciding, in the autumn of 2018, that what the city actually needed was somewhere you could play a four-hour game and order a decent drink at the same time. He trained as a barista in his twenties, ran a short-lived pop-up supper club for two years, and has an embarrassingly large personal collection of worker-placement games. He opened Cardboard & Cider in March 2019 with forty-two titles on the shelf and a rotating tap of six Ontario ciders. He still teaches new players every Saturday afternoon and is rarely seen without a sleeve of card protectors in his shirt pocket.
